Led by Parwati Dutta, its Founder-Director and eminent Kathak & Odissi artiste, MAHĀGĀMI, the only centre of its kind in Maharashtra state, is the first ISO-certified Arts center and an honorary member of the International Dance Council-UNESCO known for its unique gurukul-based pedagogical design, inter-disciplinary dialogues and path-breaking creative offerings. More than 2000 students and 150,000 seekers have benefitted from its pioneering efforts towards introducing and nurturing Kathak, Odissi, Dhrupad and other art forms in the Marathwada region.
With the formation of the MGM University in 2019, the Performing Arts Department was named as MAHĀGĀMI GURUKUL Center for Performing Arts with an aim to facilitate immersive learning with an academic edge and global worldview within the University ecosystem. The pedagogy is based on Gurukul Pattern that is widely accepted and acknowledged by Performing Arts departments across many Indian Universities. The synergy between Shāstra-Prayoga-Paramparā-Anusandhān (Textual-Praxis-Tradition-Research) forms the basis of the Gurukul-based institutional pedagogy known as MAHĀGĀMI GURUKUL which is coupled with the Choice-based credit system, also incorporating the vision towards implementation of National Education Policy (NEP).
MAHĀGĀMI GURUKUL Center for Performing Arts offers University programs in Performing Arts and Indic Studies aimed at empowering the artistically inclined, intellectually awakened learners towards realising a future as mainstream artists, knowledgeable teachers, researchers, curators, arts administrators and policy makers.
Kathak, a graceful dance marked by gliding movements, crisp rhythm patterns and silvery spins can be learnt by the beginners as well the advanced learners through the University programs. Odissi was introduced in Marathwada in 1996 by Parwati Dutta and since then few generations of learners been able to learn and perform this lyrical dance in Indian'and International festivals. The Natyashastra is probably the oldest dramaturgical treatise on the performing arts in Sanskrit attributed to sage Bharata Muni. Manipuri dance embodies delicate, lyrical and graceful movements of Lasya and the vibrant movement vocabulary of Tandava.
